Tesla to Enter India Early Next Year

While Elon Musk confirmed on his Twitter account about plans to make India debut, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari declared Tesla's entry will take place in 2021.

Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has confirmed Tesla's entry the India market after Elon Musk replied to a Twitter user that Tesla is ready to start India operations in 2021.

During the conversation with Indian Express journalists, the minister emphasized the push for electrical cars in the country and mentioned that a lot of local companies were working on electrical vehicles that could be cheaper, but as advanced as Tesla. He said Tesla will start operations with sales and later will be a probability to look at local assembly and manufacturing based on the demand. “India is going to become a number 1 manufacturing hub for auto in five years,” Gadkari added.

Elon Musk had first announced about his intentions to enter the Indian market back in 2016, and even begun pre-bookings then. But because of the uncertainties of the EV policies in the country, the launch was put on hold. In due course, the company had to cease bookings, but now those who made bookings earlier will be the first ones to get the Model 3 next year.
