Compression Ratio (CR)

Compression Ratio (CR), in an internal-combustion engine, is defined as the volume of the cylinder and combustion chamber, when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke, divided by the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the top of its stroke. A compression ratio of nine means that the mixture is compressed to one-ninth its original volume by the piston in the cylinder.
